The environment - a compilation
Selections about the environment from the writings of Maitreya, Benjamin Creme's Master, and Benjamin Creme.
Maitreya, the World Teacher, says that after the saving of the starving millions, the environment is the number one priority in the world, and that it is the responsibility of every man, woman and child to reverse the destruction we are currently wreaking on this planet.
We present a selection of excerpts on the theme of the environment from Maitreya (Messages from Maitreya the Christ, and Maitreya’s Teachings – The Laws of Life), Benjamin Creme’s Master (A Master Speaks) and Benjamin Creme’s writings.
I come to take you with Me into the New Country – the Country of Love, the Country of Trust, of Beauty and Freedom. I shall take you there if you can follow Me, accept Me, let Me lead and guide. And, if this be so, together we shall build a New World: a world in which men can live without fear, without mistrust, without division; sharing together the Earth’s bounty, knowing together the Bliss of Union with our Source. All this can be yours. (Maitreya, from Message No. 3)
When Maitreya appears, He will address the major problems which now beset humanity: the misery of the starving – the dire poverty of millions condemned to living hell; the many wars now raging, known or unheard; the vast army of refugees, displaced and discarded; the prisoners of conscience whose voices are muted in pain. Maitreya will call for a greater responsibility for the planet’s health: the creation of an economy sustainable and fair; the husbandry of resources to safeguard future generations; the purification of the environment – the air, the soil, the waters, on which all life depends. These Maitreya will address and offer His solutions…. Maitreya will call for everyone to join His army of helpers – to sustain and purify the environment; to galvanize the peoples into action on their own behalf; to cleanse the planet of polluting toxins and to re-establish harmony among the nations. His task is not little but He stands ready to fight the present evil – and to conquer. (Benjamin Creme’s Master, ‘The time has come’, SI Dec 1997)
The environment has become the top priority today. Within a few years, the priority will be mind, spirit and body, in the life of an individual. (Maitreya, The Laws of Life)
We are beginning to realize what we are doing to our environment – that we are gradually killing off the planet as a living, breathing, evolving body of expression of a Great Cosmic Being which, of course, the planet is. We are beginning to see that we cannot go on despoiling the planet, polluting the air, rivers and oceans. More and more, concerned groups have brought this to the attention of governments. At long last, many governments meet on a more or less regular basis to discuss the problems and see what can be done about them. That is a new maturity, a growing sense by humanity that it is One, brothers and sisters of one humanity, on this planet to carry out some plan, some role, which is as yet dimly felt by most people. That we are, at last, taking seriously what individual groups have for long brought to the notice of governments is a sign that we are recognizing our vulnerability and also our oneness. We are maturing. (Benjamin Creme, The Art of Co-operation)
People are concerned about the environment. Observe how this is happening around the world. If you want to feel that you are part of the Almighty, the environment becomes the mirror for the Self to realize that it is part of the entire creation. Awareness leads to looking into the environment. A clean, neat and tidy environment brings you closer to God. Even a few years ago, no politician took the environment seriously. Now the concern is there. (Maitreya, The Laws of Life)
The early signs of a new global consciousness can be seen as men realize the need for co-operation in dealing with their environmental problems. This augers well for the future and shows correct response to a major danger facing the race: unless the damage now being done to the environmental balance of the planet is quickly restored, the life expectancy of many will dramatically decrease. No one, rich or poor, is totally free from this insidious breakdown of the human immune system. Men tamper with that system at their peril. (Benjamin Creme’s Master, ‘The New Age is upon us’, SI Nov 1998)
If the environment is not restored, in a very short time there will be no new civilization. There will be no planet. We have probably another 20 to 30 years in which to restore this planet to health. Again the key to this change is the acceptance of the principle of sharing. We also have to create a sustainable economy, one which uses only resources which are renewable and correctly husbanded for future generations. The present economy enjoyed by the developed world is completely non-sustainable. If we continue as we are doing now, there will be no forests; pollution of the rivers, the seas, the air, the land will be so tremendous that disease will decimate humanity.
Pollution, according to the Masters, is already the number one killer in the world. It so diminishes the activity of the immune system that people succumb to many diseases such as pneumonia, influenza, AIDS, HIV and so on. The very air we breathe, the water, the soil, is totally polluted and we are destroying the very planet which we need for our continued existence and that of our children.
One of the major things which will happen after the Day of Declaration is the turning of the attention of humanity really strongly to the cleaning up of the environment and making this Earth viable again. Every human being, of whatever age, will be involved in this process. As soon as the needs of the starving millions are met, as soon as the process of sharing is under way, then the attention of all must turn to the support of our eco-systems, otherwise there will be no planet.
Maitreya Himself has said that the saving of the environment must become the first priority of all people, young and old. Since we have to do this to survive, I have no doubt that – with Maitreya and His group of Masters and initiates working openly as advisers – we shall do it. (Benjamin Creme, The Great Approach)
Everything around us has been created by nature, but disasters, destruction, depression and disease are man-made. The people you must demand an answer from are your leaders, those who have conditioned you and prevented you from enjoying a life of bliss and peace. The energy which is wreaking havoc in the world now through storms, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions has been unleashed because man thinks he can do what he likes. He believes that if he has a healthy bank balance he has a healthy life. But greed drives him to destruction. Spiritually and mentally he is bankrupt. We are seeing the end of the old age and the beginning of a new era. (Maitreya, The Laws of Life)
If you play with the elements of nature now, nature will punish you, because nature is your second mother. The elements will tame nations and countries, making them respect nature. You are visiting destruction on the planet.* Do the generals ever think about what is happening? Even learned people have not been able to influence them. When you throw explosives on ‘Mother Earth’, the vibrations are set into the planet. Those vibrations will eventually create earthquakes, landslides and flooding. The result of all the poisoning of the atmosphere will be sudden, extreme changes in the winds. The places where there was sunshine will experience heavy downpours and extreme conditions of cold. The result of explosions in the water is the disappearance of certain species of marine life. When you destroy Mother Nature you destroy yourself. [*Referring to the first Gulf War] (Maitreya, The Laws of Life)
… there are still grave concerns which men ignore at their peril. Chief among these is the environment which, men must know, they daily undermine. This despoliation of nature now threatens the well-being of all and augurs badly for future generations. Pollution of the planet has now reached dangerous, life-threatening levels, thus weakening man’s inherent immunity and bringing again to the fore diseases once thought vanquished for ever.
Men must realize their responsibility for the planet on which they live. Stewards, men are, of a strong but sensitive organism and must protect it from harm. Few, today, can claim that this they do. On the contrary, men waste and ride roughshod over nature’s generous munificence, unheedful of tomorrow or their children’s needs. True it is that many are awakening to this problem, but until it is understood as the concern of all, and tackled globally, little progress will be made in changing direction.
You can be sure that Maitreya is not unmindful of the dangers to mankind if they ignore this pressing difficulty. He will urge men to work – everyone – for the planet’s restoration, and point the way to a simpler and happier life.
Once restored again to health the planet will continue to give its bounty to all who approach with care and love. The elementals of the lower kingdoms know well their tasks; free from the influence of men’s disordered thoughts, these industrious builders can, in harmony, create a new and better world.
When men understand nature as the Great Mother of all, they will approach Her with reverence. Thus will She reveal to men Her secrets and laws. Armed with this new knowledge, men will in truth manifest as Gods. (Benjamin Creme’s Master, ‘The Great Mother’, SI June 2001)
You will find that the basis of Maitreya’s teaching is right relationship: between man and man (and woman); man and God; and between man and his environment, the planet. We will come to understand that man, nature, and God are One, and that proper care of the planet (and all the kingdoms in it) is essential to the well-being of the whole. (Benjamin Creme, Maitreya’s Mission Volume One)
The Self moves into and out of the mind, spirit and body at will and experiences the beauties of nature, beauties which until now were experienced only by yogis, saints and gurus. Traditionally, people believed that only through the sacred books of the Koran, the Bible, the Gita, and by living exceptionally good lives, could they qualify for such experiences. Not any more. As the Self learns to move through the mind, spirit and body these beautiful experiences can become a daily thing. (Maitreya, The Laws of Life)
There is a link between the inner and the outer environment. The moment you become aware of yourself, the environment within your mind, spirit and body is under your control. Then this development spreads to the family, then nationwide. Politicians will no longer be able to control the people through the rule of parliament without adequate representation of the people’s will. The will of the people will prevail. (Maitreya, The Laws of Life)
In time, men will come to understand the true nature of their relationship with the lower kingdoms, and accept gladly the role of steward for their evolution. This will lead to a transformation in all aspects of farming and agriculture, in forestry and fishing. Gone for ever will be the present methods: despoliation of forest and soil; over- cultivation of impoverished land; greedy and reckless pursuit of many species of animal and fish.
A halt must soon be called to this unholy war on nature’s bounty. No longer must men allow the poisoning of the Earth and waters, which threatens the lives of man and beast alike. No longer is it fitting to engage in farming methods which prohibit the basic rights of movement and access to air and light. The cruel exploitation, for experiment, of countless creatures must give way to saner means of research and knowledge.
Many, today, are concerning themselves with these issues and calling for change. Men’s minds are moving in the right direction and naught can halt this momentum. Nevertheless, vast changes are needed forthwith to maintain the ecological balance in the world.
When the Earth is viewed as a living entity, complete in all its parts, each essential to the Whole, a new vision and a new sanity will prevail. Men will come to see themselves as stewards of a natural order, preordained to function in harmony and beauty, each kingdom related, above it and below it, according to the Plan.
Today, vast sums are spent on research into nature’s laws. At the same time, enorm ous resources are wasted and misused. Were these resources directed to stabilizing the natural balance, a new world would emerge. Man would find himself the possessor of secrets long hidden from him. He would enter areas of knowledge until now closed to his enquiring mind. Nature would yield up her mysteries and man would begin a partnership with the creating Logos, taking his rightful place as custodian of the Plan.
Man has the power to make all things new or to destroy his world; never before has such omnipotence been his. To ensure the correct use of this power requires the expression of a wisdom seldom seen today, but one that man must find within himself or die. Fortunately for the race, man is not alone. (Benjamin Creme’s Master, ‘The role of man’, SI Dec 1985)
The time is coming when every house will have a garden and the flowers growing there, of different colours, are the symbols of the children of the Earth. Where you live, sleep and eat, your symbol of God is a garden. Spend at least 10 to 15 minutes a day looking after it, growing things in it, and come very close to Me. A mystery will evolve from that garden, cleansing mind and spiri(Maitreya, The Laws of Life)
Maitreya says there are two environments, an inner and an outer. The outer reflects the inner. If the inner is disturbed, the outer also is disturbed. We are witnessing this today. Because we are so disturbed in our inner environment, not recognizing ourselves as spiritual beings related to each other, we rape, pillage and despoil. We inflict our greed and aggression on each other in wars and all sorts of aggressive actions and reap the results: a gradual erosion of the very environment which keeps us in being as a species. If we do not address this problem, the human and sub-human kingdoms of this planet will die out. Many ecologists recognize this fact. The ‘green’ agencies have been talking about this for years, trying to impress on governments the need for change. (Benjamin Creme, Maitreya’s Mission Volume Three)
Why is everyone becoming ‘green’ now? Awareness of the environment is the first step in Self realization. Individuals are becoming environmentalists. (This begins with concern for what one eats, drinks, breathes, etc.) Politicians think the world is their oyster. Yet all the ideologies have failed and will continue to fail. Individuals are going to produce changes. (Maitreya, The Laws of Life)
No longer is it certain that the planet can sustain life indefinitely, subject to its ruthless exploitation by man. Nuclear annihilation is an ever-present threat, while economic competition and financial disarray pose problems which afflict the daily lives of countless millions.
Not for nothing is it now a commonplace for nations to meet to discuss these problems. Such meetings are a sign that man is becoming aware of his responsibilities as steward of the planet, and is ready to take decisions to improve his situation. Foremost among these decisions must be the readiness to share. When the world’s goods are shared more equitably, half of man’s problems will vanish overnight. Already, there are indications that many realize this, and the call for sharing is rising on every hand. The wise foresee the need for sharing as the only basis of lasting peace, and the heroes of the young lend, too, their popular voice.
This augurs well for the future, for it shows that mankind at last is aware of the choice before it – to share or die – and is ready to act in the spirit of brotherhood and love. No longer are men content to leave their destiny in the hands of others – to governments formed of blind and ageing men – but see the need for direct participation to safeguard their future and their world. (Benjamin Creme’s Master, ‘Sharing for peace’, SI Oct 1985)
One of the major activities of the Space Brothers is to neutralize the pollution with which we are destroying our planet – caused in the main by nuclear radiation which is pouring out from the nuclear power houses all over the world. Every underground nuclear explosion also puts into the air dust which is totally contaminated by nuclear radiation with a half-life of thousands and thousands of years. Within karmic limits they mop up as much radiation and pollution as possible. They also go down into the oceans and neutralize waste which we have dumped there and which otherwise would kill off marine life and further poison the planet … The advice of Maitreya and the Masters will be to close down immediately all nuclear-fission power stations in the world. They could be replaced tomorrow with a safe fusion process of nuclear power as an interim measure before the coming Technology of Light. One of the main factors in maintaining our ecosystem is our Space Brothers: we owe them an enormous debt.… (Benjamin Creme, The Great Approach)
Politicians who sacrifice the aspirations and security of nations to balance their own failed political ideologies will not succeed. The energies which are wasted in the pursuit of their policies will rebound through the elements of nature, in the shape of floods, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. (Maitreya, The Laws of Life)
More and more, the planet’s precarious state of imbalance, created by man’s misuse, sounds a warning note which men ignore at their peril. The very breath by which men live is threatened, the air, polluted and poisoned, wreaks havoc on the lives of many millions.
Into this crisis has come Maitreya. He knows the dangers better than any man. What can He do to help men save themselves from further suffering, and to restore the planet to full and vibrant health?
The Karmic Law controls the nature and the scope of the aid that He may give. Advice and guidance will be man’s for the asking but men must be prepared to change the present modes of living to ensure the planet’s future and the future of their children. The resources of the Earth are finite but with good husbandry and sharing, adequate for the needs of all.
Men must, therefore, redefine these needs, and enter into a new and truer understanding of the meaning and the purpose of their lives. This will come when a measure, even, of sharing has replaced the present destructive competition, and led man away from the precipice edge. The choice is man’s: to share and flourish, or to continue in deadly competition and together die(Benjamin Creme’s Master, ‘The choice is man’s’, SI Nov 1997)
They are elemental forces which control and organize the patterns of nature. They are energy forces and respond to human thought. When our thoughts are in equilibrium, they are in equilibrium. When our thoughts are destructive and chaotic, as today, the devas go out of equilibrium. This has resulted in the complete distortion of the world’s weather. For instance, we see floods, major earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, torrential rain where they have never been known, lack of rain where it was normal, hurricanes. All of these phenomena have been with us since we can remember but in controlled patterns. All of that has gone. There is no set pattern in the world’s weather today. When we come into equilibrium by creating the conditions of equilibrium – living together in peace, sharing the resources of the world, creating, thereby, harmony in the world – the devas will return to their preordained forms and patterns and create equilibrium once again. They respond directly to human thought. (Benjamin Creme, Maitreya’s Mission Volume Two)
The new energy sweeping through our world will make the land more fertile. People will experience greater health, and we shall see many diseases begin to disappear. As a result of the energy of equilibrium, people will be able to live in closer contact with nature, and there will be greater harmony between the plant, animal and human kingdoms. Destructive forces (the effects of human behaviour) are being reversed in such a way that they will become constructive. Because of the greater harmony between nature and humanity, people will be happier: to disturb the environment is to disturb your own nature.… There is a link, Maitreya says, between the inner and the outer environment: the moment you become aware of yourself, the environment within your mind, spirit and body is under your control. This awareness then leads you to look into the outer environment.” (Maitreya, SI July/August 1990)
The sun has been brought closer to the Earth – in a particular way (symbolically speaking) – in order to energize it. This will help people live closer to nature. There will be greater harmony between the plant, animal and human kingdoms. Nature will respond positively in terms of new vegetation, new food. Because of greater harmony between nature and people, people will be happier. To disturb the environment is to disturb your own nature. (Maitreya, The Laws of Life)
Step by step, men will set in motion the requirements of the future. These must respect the destiny and free will of all. The right to the essentials of life: food, shelter, healthcare and education, must condition the direction of all governments’ actions. The safeguarding of the environment – with all that that entails – must become a sacred duty which will allow men, in time, to nurse this planet back to health. So must it be if men would inherit their birthright and find, again, the path to God. (Benjamin Creme’s Master, ‘The requirements of the future’, SI April 2000)
Time is short indeed for the reconstruction of our world along lines more befitting Man’s true role and purpose. My task is to show you the way, outline the possibilities only, for by Man himself must the New World be forged … I shall show you that the way for Man is the way of brotherhood, close co-operation and mutual trust and service. This is the only way. All else has failed. My friends, unless Man can do this, Man on this Earth will cease to be. I threaten not but simply state the truth. There is but little time left to restore the balance of nature and the world. Make it your primary task to release to all men the wherewithal to exist in human dignity, as Sons of God, Brothers all. Make over, in trust for all men, the produce of the world to the nations of the world. Do this today as free men and reap the glory tomorrow as True Sons of God. (Maitreya, from Message No. 12)
